PolyGrow Seeder
The PolyGrow Seeder is a one-metre manual planting tool being developed for small-scale farmers. The concept aims to make seed placement more accurate while remaining affordable, practical and suitable for local production.

Improving a demanding part of small-scale farming
Planting by hand can take time and place physical strain on farmers. When seeds are positioned unevenly, crops may compete for space and resources, which can affect the quality of the harvest.
The concept
Sphamandla’s idea is a manually operated seeder that helps a farmer place seeds at selected intervals while moving along a planting row. It is intended to work without fuel or electricity.
From idea to field use
Each stage builds on the previous one, moving the concept toward practical use by farmers.
How it would work
- The farmer guides the tool along a prepared planting row
- A seed container feeds seeds into a simple metering mechanism
- The spacing setting controls how frequently seeds are released
- The seed is dropped into the soil as the tool moves forward
